Tree trimming cost in Brisbane comes down to five things: how big the tree is, how hard it is to get to, what is underneath it, whether powerlines are in play, and what happens to the green waste. Two trees the same height can be quoted very differently because of those five things. A proper quote is a site visit (or good photos), a set price for the whole job, and no surprises on the day.
That is the short answer. Here is the long one, from a crew that prunes trees across Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich every week of the year. You will notice there is no price list on this page. That is on purpose. We put a number on a tree after we have seen it, and anyone who quotes you sight unseen is guessing with your money.
What actually decides the tree trimming cost?
When an arborist walks around your tree, they are not admiring it. They are pricing the day. Here is what runs through their head, in roughly the order it matters.
1. Size, and what “size” really means
Height matters less than people think. What matters is how much timber has to come off and how far the climber has to work from the trunk. A 20 metre gum with a tidy upright shape can be a quicker job than a 10 metre camphor laurel that has spread sideways over three yards. Long horizontal limbs mean more rope work, more rigging and more time spent out on the end of a branch with a saw.
The type of tree counts too. Cocos palms are quick. A big old Moreton Bay fig or a jacaranda with a lot of deadwood is slow, careful work.
2. Access: can the chipper get close?
This is the quiet cost driver. If the truck and chipper can park next to the tree, every branch goes straight into the hopper. If the tree is down the back of a battleaxe block, behind a pool, or through a side gate that is 900 mm wide, every piece gets carried or dragged by hand. On a Park Ridge acreage job we can often drive right up to the tree. In an older Ashgrove street with a Queenslander, a steep driveway and a garden the owner loves, the same tree takes half a day longer because the crew is walking everything out.

3. What is underneath it
A tree over a paddock gets cut and dropped. A tree over a roof, a pool, a glasshouse, a neighbour’s carport or a new Colorbond fence gets dismantled in small pieces and lowered on ropes. The timber is the same. The method is not. Rigging every limb instead of letting it fall can double the climbing time, and it is the right call every time there is something you do not want flattened.
4. Powerlines
If the tree is near the service line to your house or the lines along the street, the job changes. There are exclusion zones for anyone who is not trained and authorised to work near live lines, and Energex has its own rules about who can do what. Energex trims vegetation around the street lines; the service line to your house is the owner’s responsibility, and only authorised contractors should work near it. Read the Energex trees and powerlines page before you let anyone near them. Power work adds planning, sometimes a line shutdown, and always extra care, so it adds to the quote.
5. Green waste and timber
Everything that comes off the tree has to go somewhere. Chipping on site and taking the mulch away is the standard. If you want the mulch left in a pile for your garden beds, say so, because it saves us a trip and that can trim the price. If you want the trunk cut into rounds and left, that is a different amount of work again. Big logs that will not fit through the chipper need the grapple truck, and that is another machine on site.
Why do two quotes for the same tree come back so different?
Because the two companies are not pricing the same job. One is pricing a proper reduction prune to the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees (AS 4373), with a qualified climber, a ground crew, insurance, a chipper and a tip fee. The other is pricing a bloke with a ladder and a chainsaw who is going to lop the top off and leave you with a tree that sprouts a mess of weak shoots and comes back worse in two years.
A few things to check when a quote looks too good:
- Are they insured? Ask for the certificate of currency. Public liability is not optional for tree work.
- Is there a qualified arborist on the job? Ask about the AQF level. Our crews work under AQF Level 5 arborists.
- Is the clean-up included? “Trim” sometimes means “cut and leave it on the lawn.”
- Does the quote say what is being cut? “Tidy up the gum” is not a scope. “Crown lift to 3 metres, remove deadwood over 50 mm, reduce the limb over the roof by 2 metres” is.
We wrote the same kind of guide for removals, if that is the job you are actually facing: tree removal costs in Brisbane, explained simply.
Does trimming cost less than removal?
Usually, yes, and it is often the better outcome. A good prune keeps the shade, keeps the tree out of the gutters, and keeps council happy. In Brisbane City Council areas you can prune up to 20 per cent of the live foliage in a 12 month period without a permit, but a protected tree is still a protected tree, so check the BCC protected vegetation map first, or ask us. We look it up every week.
There are trees that should not be trimmed because they should be removed. A gum with a hollow trunk and a big lean over the house is not a pruning job, no matter how much cheaper the prune looks on paper. If an arborist tells you that, it is not an upsell. It is the honest answer.
Does the time of year change the price?
A little. Storm season (October to March) is our busiest time, and after a big cell goes through the south side, the phone does not stop. Emergency work is priced as emergency work because it means pulling a crew off a booked job, often at night, in the wet. If your tree is not urgent, booking it in the cooler, drier months gives you the pick of dates and a calmer job. We covered the seasons in when to prune trees in Australia.

What should a tree trimming quote include?
A quote worth signing has a scope (which tree, which limbs, how far), a method (climb, elevated work platform, crane), what happens to the waste, whether any council permit or arborist report is needed, a fixed price including GST, and proof of insurance. It should name the company doing the work, not a lead-generation site passing your details to whoever answers first.
Photos get you most of the way. If you send us three shots (the whole tree, the base, and whatever is underneath or beside it) through the quote form, we can usually give you a firm price without a site visit. For big trees, trees near powerlines or anything with a lean, we come out and look.
What makes a trimming job cheaper?
You cannot change the tree, but you can change the day. Clear the gate and driveway so the chipper can get close. Move cars, pots, trampolines and the dog. Say yes to keeping the mulch if you can use it. Book two trees at once instead of two separate visits, and if your neighbour in Wynnum or The Gap has been meaning to get theirs done, line the jobs up on the same morning. A crew that is already set up next door is a cheaper crew.
And prune on time. A tree that gets a light dead-wood and thin every few years costs less over its life than one that gets ignored for a decade and then needs a crane and a full day. It is the same as the car: the service is cheaper than the breakdown.
The honest version
Nobody likes “it depends” as an answer, but with trees it is the truth. The crew that gives you a price without seeing the tree is either guessing high to cover themselves or guessing low to get the booking and finding the extras on the day. We would rather look, tell you exactly what we are going to do, and put one number on it. That is how tree pruning in Brisbane should work.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a tree trimming cost calculator for Brisbane?
Not one worth trusting. Online calculators use height alone, and height is the least useful number in a tree quote. Access, what is under the tree, powerlines and the amount of timber coming off matter far more. Three photos sent to a local arborist will get you a firmer price than any calculator.
Is tree trimming charged per hour or per job?
Reputable Brisbane arborists quote a fixed price for the whole job, including the crew, the chipper, clean-up and tip fees. Hourly rates sound cheaper but leave you carrying the risk of a slow day. Ask for a fixed price with a written scope and GST included.
Why does tree trimming cost more near powerlines?
Only trained and authorised people are allowed to work inside the exclusion zones around live powerlines, and the job may need extra planning or an Energex shutdown. Energex looks after the street lines; the service line to your house is the owner's responsibility. That extra care and planning adds to the price.
Is it cheaper to trim several trees at once?
Usually. A lot of the cost of a small job is getting the crew, truck and chipper to your place and set up. Booking two or three trees in one visit, or lining up a job with a neighbour on the same morning, spreads that cost across more work.
Does the tree trimming cost include taking the green waste away?
It should, and the quote should say so. Chipping on site and removing the mulch is standard. If you would like the mulch left for your garden beds, tell the arborist, because it saves a tip run and can bring the price down a little.
Do I need council approval to trim a tree in Brisbane?
In Brisbane City Council areas you can prune up to 20 per cent of a tree's live foliage in a 12 month period without a permit, but protected vegetation has its own rules, so check the council's protected vegetation map first. Logan and Ipswich have different overlays. If you are not sure, ask us; we check it every week.
