How do I calculate how much mulch I need?

Multiply the length by the width of your garden bed (in metres) then multiply by the depth in metres. For example, a 5m x 3m bed at 75mm (0.075m) depth needs 5 × 3 × 0.075 = 1.125m³ of mulch. Round up to the nearest half-cubic to give yourself a buffer.

How deep should mulch be?

50-75mm is the minimum for ornamental garden beds. 100mm gives good weed suppression. Never go over 150mm — too deep and water can’t reach the roots, and the mulch can start composting before it reaches the soil.

How many square metres does 1 cubic metre of mulch cover?

At 75mm depth, 1m³ of mulch covers roughly 13m². At 100mm depth it covers about 10m². At 50mm depth you’ll get about 20m² out of each cubic.
